Segway Mentoring Program
Mentoring for the Millennium, is a formal mentoring program in which high school students participating in the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP are paired with a Syracuse University Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) student for one academic year. Segway uniquely combines mentoring and positive life experiences with the opportunity for both academic and personal growth.
Participants will have the opportunity to get acquainted with one another and discuss personal and academic goals and desired outcomes for the mentor-mentee relationship. The purpose of the mentor/mentee relationship is to enrich personal, academic and career development. Through the mentoring relationship we hope that a support system for both mentor and mentee will be established. Activities will be developed around the students' needs and interests. The Office of Graduate and College Preparation Programs assume responsibility of initiating, monitoring and evaluating these contacts and providing the necessary support for the project.
Program Objectives
To establish a foundation and support system for a long standing relationship between mentor/mentee
To expose students to diverse cultural events
To broaden the knowledge of high school students about the college experience
To heighten students' awareness to career opportunities
Requirements and Expectations
Mentors/mentees must maintain an above average GPA (Mentors must have a 2.7 GPA and Mentees (STEP students) must have and maintain an overall GPA of 75 or better).
Communicate a minimum of four (4) hours per month i.e. meetings, telephone, calls, e-mail, etc.
Attend 2-3 planned activities throughout the academic year.
Complete SEGWAY personal, academic and career goals and expectations form.
Create personal pair contract for the relationship, outlining each person's personal, social educational and career goals for the year. Assessments for these goals would be done on a monthly basis.
